Visit from "it's what I'm into"

I was recently visited at my home studio by Sara Trickett and Tyrone Bradley from itswhatiminto.  They came to take a peep around my home (very rustic) and studio for a post on their uber cool and popular blog.  Without further adieu, here are a few of my favourite photos of the visit by Tyrone.

Beautiful suprises!

One miserable Monday a lovely lady showed up at my front door with a beautiful gift just for me.
She was a stranger who was my "secret santa" through an initiative by blogger Kelly (Sunflowers and Spears).  It really turned a ordinary day into a special day.  In the madness of getting ready to take a family of 5 on holiday I forgot to share my happiness and special gift on my blog.  So apologies to Samantha, but below is her delightful gift and a link to her blog Everything Samantha Hearts.

Birds in a Boudoir

This commission for 3 long box framed paper and mixed media artworks was for the most lovely young lady's bedroom.  It was french inspired with the palest pink mixed with black trim - glamorous and girly!
Here are some of the elements to the artworks as they evolved... then the final pieces.
They were almost 2 meters long!
The art piece from my Paper Trail exhibition that inspired the trilogy

Layers of hand cut birdcages, paper flowers and paper garlands.
I embroidered artwork onto actual hoops that were incorporated into the frames.

 The pieces are called:
"In the stillness of my heart",
"In the secret of my Dreams",
"Is the place where I am free".
Viola!

Scraps Chaps!

I like making something out of nothing but a few scraps.  I need more than my usual attention span to do these but i think the result is worth the extra effort.  Anytime I use a matchbox to make something I am reminded of the time when I made all kinds of things for my dolls house using matchboxes, pegs and ice lolly sticks... ah the days.

Writing a new chapter

After a stunning holiday on my sister's farm in Malelane (near the Kruger Park) I am back home and in my studio ready to write a new chapter... here we go 2012!

Something old...

I have been making these paper roses out of old pattern paper for our Malva pop up shop.  I was called by a lady today to make one large one for her wedding posy instead of fresh flower.  I thought what a lovely idea and am thrilled I'll have something of mine part of her special day... something old!

How much is that doggy in the window?

Did you ever dress your pets up when you were little?  I love animals in outfits!  My mom knitted our Jack Russell Rusty a polo neck argyle "jersey", it was so adorable but he pulled it off and buried in the garden!  This is inspired by Rusty!
This doggy is for sale!

Ahoy there Sailor!

This little chap is another one of my character's inspired by vintage puppets.  I think I smell summer around the corner!

The circus of my mind...

I am working on evolving my 3D art pieces into small cabinets of curiosities and collections of oddities.
I have been inspired by my childhood memories of collecting "treasures" in tins and little suitcases, scavenger hunts and the things children collect such as cards, marbles, dolls etc.

This is interwoven with the idea of curiosity cabinets which evolved from the wonderkammer (rooms of wonder) in the 16th century - collections of wonders gathered by the travels of wealthy.  Later the middle and upper class had just cabinets displaying their collections.  Nowadays such collections are housed in museums. (Love!)  Been wanting to go to the Natural Museum to draw and be inspired for a while now.  Must go!

It may well just be an excuse to trawl through junk shops collecting things that fascinate me...
SO EXCITED!

Vintage scale lives happily ever after...

A lovely lady saw this print in Dec last year and dropped huge hints for her hubby!  Sadly he did not take the hints and he never bought the art for her.  A few months later they returned to come and buy the print - it was on her birthday!  Unfortunately I had literally sold my last print 10 mins before they came to my stall.  She was not a happy camper and I think her husband was in the dog box this time!
A few weeks later I did a huge clean up and guess what I found! She was thrilled (hubby relieved) and says not only will it be treasured forever but will be joining her William Kentridges!  What good company it has found and it was obviously meant for her!
